DYING NATURAL HAIR WITH BOX DYE?!

This week I did something different with my hair.. I know that there is constant negative reviews on box hair dye but during these times how is a girl going to switch up when she wants to? I went through a whole week thought process when I was thinking about dying my hair. First, I thought what brand do I use that is not going to do damage to my hair. I went through all the ones that they have at my nearest walmart because there is nothing else open out here in Radford. I wanted to pick the Creme of Nature brand because I’ve heard really good things about that brand. It’s good for curly hair because that’s their main specialty. I’m in a pretty rural area where they don’t have many diverse products so I went with the best rated ones that they had there which was the Clairol Natural Instincts.

Clairol Natural Instincts Black Hair Dye

My opinion on the product is actually very positive. First, It is a demi-permanent dye so it says it washes out in 28 washes. It comes with a developer, hair dye, conditioner and gloves. You have to shake the dye and developer together so it’s mixed together equally and you should part your hair or do like me and just put it on however you want. You apply it to dry hair & then keep it in for 20 minutes and then rinse( DO NOT WASH) until the water is clear then you apply the conditioner that they provide and keep it in for two minutes. The dye didn’t have a strong smell to it at all and I was very happy about that. When I first was rinsing it out it felt a little heavy of course but, after applying the conditioner and styling my hair it felt very soft and my curls were very defined.

I was very pleased with this product because no lie, I was a little nervous. The reviews were iffy but I am glad I just went and did it! Black is a natural conditioner so I’m super glad I went with black and I’m thinking about going permanent! It brings out the defintion in my curls. I recommend this product but I suggest doing your research too and what you think is right for your hair!

Let me know if there’s any suggestions for hair dye or comments, concerns anything! Dying your hair is a huge choice to do to your hair especially if you’re growing it or just going natural. I recommend doing a natural color like brown or black if you’re trying to achieve a goal in your hair but have fun! If you want to do it GO FOR IT!!

DO YOU BELIEVE IN CULTURAL APPROPRIATION?

Hey guys! I know this topic is a very sensitive topic so I wanted to state this is my opinion! It’s okay to feel differently, I mean you shouldn’t but hey, to each it’s own.

I wanted to touch on this topic this week because, I don’t know if you guys are into social media alot but, the young rapper “Bhad Bhabie” was recently the hot topic in the news of her “Blackfishing” people. If you’re confused on what that exactly means the urban dictionary definition is: “Commonly perpetrated by females of European descent (white) which involves artificial tanning (spray tanning and tanning booths) and using makeup to manipulate facial features in order to appear to have some type of Black African ancestry. The general point of blackfishing is for a female of European descent to appear of African, Arab, or Hispanic ancestry. Some consider it to be equivalent to modern day “black face” because it capitalizes off the looks of historically oppressed groups of people by people who come from more privileged backgrounds.” She posted a picture on Instagram of her with really really tan skin and lip fillers that gives her a little more black features. She tried to argue with people on Instagram live and as she was explaining her self she said ” Think about the movie tarzan” which is a movie that a white boy is raised by wild animals..Racist people compare black people to animals so that wasn’t too smart of her…Lets be real though, She isnt the first one who has tried to get away with something like this. I personally think that you should be happy in your own skin and where you come from.

“The origin of braids can be traced back 5000 years in African culture to 3500 BC—they were very popular among women.” Braids are not just a style; this craft is a form of art. … Braid patterns and hairstyles were an indication of a person’s tribe, age, marital status, wealth, power, and religion.” So why do white people or people that aren’t black need to wear braids? It’s just like why do you need to say the N word if you’re not black. It’s just a respect thing. Just don’t do it. Of course I’m not going to kill somebody or say anything if I see someone not black using our culture but, you look dumb. They aren’t made for other textures of hair so just leave it alone! YOUR HAIR WILL FALL OUT! If people of other races just left our black history alone history wouldn’t keep replaying itself over and over again.

I personally think after all these years black people finally got something of their own to express themselves and their culture and of course, the others just want to F*ck it up! I know there are certain things white people have said about black people wanting to be white but, in reality you can’t say those type of things. Just because we wear our hair straight or blonde has nothing to do with white people. To me what even is y’alls culture? Not your hair. I don’t think white people have a culture really that only they can have but slavery.

This is just my opinion on how non-blacks look taking our culture! Just stop! You look silly. Use what is meant for you and everything will be peaceful. You would think we wouldn’t have to talk about this all the time but hey, people are ignorant.

BED HAIR HAIRSTYLES!

I love my bed hair! Most times when I’m going to class I just wake up and go depending on how crazy it looks. In this link below I show you a couple of quick styles I do to just wake up and go without wetting your hair. I also sleep on a satin pillow instead of putting it in a hair cap. This is also pretty cool styles to do since we’re stuck in the house and have permanent bed hair lmao!

2.Pineapple/ High ponytail

3. up down ponytail

4.up down bun

5. slick low bun

WATCH YOUR DIET

E
ven though it doesn’t seem like what you eat/ drink will have anything to do with effecting your hair growth it does! Anything you insert inside your body affects how healthy you. Please watch your intake!

I will link you guys my blog where I explain what type of products I use in my hair to keep it looking real nice. https://naturalhair.business.blog/2020/02/05/how-i-keep-my-natural-curls-on-point/

I’m going to also add some natural hair growth remedies you can do at home if you’re stuck in the house right now because of COVID-19.

1.COCONUT OIL

This isn’t something that everyone randomly has in their pantry but it’s worth a try! Use virgin coconut oil, you can get it anywhere that sells food! It works the best with dry hair and just lather it all throughout your hair. Get a plastic cap or a shower cap and keep it on for about 20-30 minutes.

2.ALOE VERA

I know aloe vera is one of the plants that are popular right now so hopefully you guys can try this natural remedy! Aloe vera is usually used for treating hair loss. It soothes the scalp and also conditons your hair! You can also apply aloe vera gel you get from the store! You can also use it as conditioner, shampoo, curl definition anything!

3.MASSAGING

Massage your scalp! You can buy one of those scalp massagers or use your fingers. I was reading “How a scalp massage facilitates hair growth” by Vaishnavi Thakur’s blog about scalp massages and they stated that “While a head massage concentrates on your head as a whole—including forehead, nape etc., a scalp massage is what promotes hair growth. Massaging your scalp with a purpose of hair growth requires applying pressure on the scalp using fingers. This is essentially done to increase the blood circulation to the hair follicles, rejuvenate the roots and condition the scalp.” You can check out the link connected to the words!

This stuff is just a couple things I’ve tried or know about. I suggest you try one during this pandemic! Why not? There’s nothing to do anyways. Let me know if you have any questions! Please comment if you have any suggestions! I would like to know how y’all feel!

HAIR PAINT WAX!

Hey y’all! Hope you guys are doing well and staying safe INSIDE your homes! Sorry I haven’t been on in two weeks because of this pandemic! but, I’M BACK! This week I’m going to talk about the famous hair paint wax!!! I’ve been wanting to try this stuff since it has came out! I will be posting a 6 min tutorial on how I put it in my hair down below. I will also be asking any common questions I get about it as well below! Thank you guys for being here still with me. I know y’all want to see this!

COMMON QUESTIONS:

Where did you get this from and how much was it?

I got the Mofang hair paint wax from amazon for about $6.47! There’s different brands but this was the cheapest! (broke college student)) 😂

Is this stuff permanent??

All hair paint waxes are temporary! As soon as you wash it out it goes away, it also doesn’t stain ANYTHING! It washes out of anything it touches which is a really nice perk to have with this kind of product!

Does it mess up your natural curl?

NO!! It actually brings out the best curl in your hair, my hair really looks the best with the hair paint wax! When I wash it out as well my curls still look fantastic!

Can you try this with straight hair?

I have not tried this with my hair straight and I also haven’t seen much success with it when I looked at youtube videos. Hair paint wax is more for curly hair.

Best Gels to Slay Your Edges!

Girls! Finding gels to lay my hair done the right way is SO HARD. I seriously always google the best gels and still get disappointed and especially when I go to the stores I always look up reviews! So I’m going to list a couple of products that work well on my hair and I hope it helps you too! I’m going to also list a youtube video that helped me the best to really to lay my edges down.

XTREME HAIR GEL

I LOVE this gel! It is a perfect gel for the top of your hair to lay it down good. I also used it throughout my hair to get the curls defined and looking good. It is NOT flaky at all! You know we love that! I don’t use it to craft my edges because it makes those hairs curl up. You can get this at Walmart for about $5.00 or less.

GOT2b GLUED

This holding gel is AMAZING! Not only you can use these on your wigs to melt the lace and hold it down it does so good on your edges. The only thing is only to use a dab! Like the size of a stud earring is all you need on your finger and mix it with water. If you use too much it will flake a lot and it will not be pretty. Pair this with the Xtreme gel and it works so well! I only use it to craft my edges, or if I’m trying to slick down my hair. It lasts a long time too! It’s Worth it! You can get it from Target or Walmart for about $5.00

HICKS EDGES GEL

This gel is amazing! I don’t use it much because I like it more when my hair is blown out or straight because it doesn’t really work on wet hair. I do use it if my hair is dry and I’m slicking it up in a ponytail or bun. It also works really well on protective styles to lay down your edges. You only need a little bit of this and it lasts soo long! It is on the more expensive side and I’ve only seen them in my local beauty supply stores for about $13.00. I only get this when I know I have money! LOL.

Edge Brush

I use this perfect my edges and make them look really good! They are like .99 cents at the beauty supply! I recommend this because it’s honestly the only way to make your edges look good. Big brushes just don’t work out.

Below is the video I told yall about the perfect way to lay your edges!

I hope this worked out for you because I know it took me forever to find the perfect routine. Let me know if you have any questions, concerns or recommendations! I would love to hear what you guys use on your hair! Thanks for reading 🙂

What NOT to say/do to natural curly girls/Black girls

There are so many Do’s and Don’t on what not to say to girls with big curly hair! I know sometimes you don’t even know these certain things are corny or offensive but it’s time to nip them in the butt RIGHT NOW!

  1. “You have nappy hair”

Nappy is NOT an adjective to describe anybody’s hair. Nobody has nappy hair. I know sometimes people mean curly or frizzy but, there are so many different hair types that we could refer the tighter curls to kinky curls or 4c hair. I just really cannot stand that word, it’s derogatory to me. It gives me PTSD because when I was a freshman in high school I had my hair out and curly and it was HUGE! Like tina turners hair and he called me “nappy head” and ever since then I’ve despised that term.

2.Don’t touch my hair without asking!

I hope most of you have learned this or heard about this rule. It seriously is like the #1 rule that we enforce. Please ask before touching our hair! For me, the reason why I don’t like it is that some people’s instinct is to run their fingers through but, that will frizz up our hair and make the curls look more like waves. It’s just so annoying as well like please make sure it’s okay!

3. Don’t ask loudly “Is that your real hair?”

Some girls embrace it, some girls rather you not ask at all. I hate that question mainly in public it’s just like dang, is that really what you first think of me when you see me?; Especially a stranger it’s like WTF! Honestly, why does it matter! I know I look good girl!! Just be mindful of your surroundings when you ask personal questions.

4. “I like your hair better straight”

Do you understand how much confidence it took for me to like when my hair was natural? Everyone used to say it’s beautiful and “People will pay for your hair!” but, I never believed them because at school girls would make fun of me and pull my hair. I know it might not sound insulting and it’s your preference and I understand that. It’s just that comments like that are better off unsaid.

5. *While someone is wearing a natural style (wigs, braids e.t.c.)* “I like your real hair better”

It is SO annoying hearing that YOU like my hair better natural. I didn’t do this for you. I changed my hair because it’s healthy for my hair and I like it. I love switching up styles and that’s something special for you to enjoy. I love wearing braids and wigs because it protects my hair from getting dry and it can grow faster as well.

If you have said any of these things don’t feel bad about it because it happens sometimes you don’t know so just think about what you say for now on! Let me know if you have any questions.

What NOT to do to natural hair!

Last week I talked about how I keep my hair looking and feeling healthy. This week I’m going to be talking about what not to do to your natural hair so you won’t damage it!

  1. NO HEAT!

LADIES! I cannot stress this enough! Heat is your WORST enemy when it comes to curly hair! Of course, you have those times when you want to see how long your hair looks or how good it looks when it’s straight but, be prepared to not see your curls pop back entirely when you wash your hair again. If you keep your hair healthy before you decide to straighten it, it won’t be hard to keep it. Also, I love getting silk presses! I don’t know how effective it is on keeping the hair healthy because you’re still using heat but, I think it makes my hair feel nice!

Me after a silk press

2. DO NOT SLEEP WITH YOUR HAIR IN A TIGHT PONYTAIL/BUN

Sleeping with your hair tight will cause breakage and you might start losing hair at your hairline. Even wearing them when you aren’t sleeping will cause this breakage so try to keep your hair out most of the time! USE SATIN PILLOW COVERS!

3. DON’T WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY!

Washing your natural hair every day will dry out your curls! You do not need to wash your hair every day. That’s where co-washing comes into place! Check out my last post on what co-wash I use! https://naturalhair.business.blog/2020/02/05/how-i-keep-my-natural-curls-on-point/ You do not want dry/brittle hair!

4. DON’T COMB THROUGH YOUR CURLS

When you comb your hair, comb from the bottom to the top and section your hair when you do it as well. You will break your hair off badly and create split ends if you don’t do this!! Use a leave-in conditioner or a detangler! You will thank me later, I promise!

5. DON’T FORGET TO CLIP YOUR SPLIT ENDS!

I know you want to keep your length you’ve been growing out for a long time but, those split ends are not cute sis! Trimming your split ends is one of the keys to an healthy hair growth! Please don’t forget how important this is! I would go about every 2-3 months.

6. Do NOT bleach your hair!

Bleaching your hair is such a no-no when it comes to our curls. I made the worst mistake about 4 years ago bleaching my hair. I swear my curls looked like ramen noodles! It took a while to get my hair the way it looks now. I had to dye it back a natural color (which I didn’t do immediately) but it was worth it. If you do decide to dye or bleach your hair go to a professional that works with natural hair because there are ways to keep your curls looking bouncy and pretty but, it will still do damage anyway.

Me in 2016 with blonde hair

These are just a couple of tips to keep your hair healthy! Of course, we don’t follow all the rules but, these are some of the best steps for keeping your hair looking nice! Let me know if you have any questions about my routines or what I specifically do!!

How I keep my natural curls on point!

Welcome back, ladies! and HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!! This week I’ll be talking about how I keep my hair healthy and my curls popping! There are so many ways people keep their hair maintained that is suitable for their hair texture but, I’m going to talk specifically about what I use but, you can use it too and it might work out for you as well!

  1. Deep Conditoner

I love this conditioner so much! It’s the ” Aussie 3 minute miracle moist deep conditioner“. I’ve been using this for about over 6 months and I love the results it gave my hair! It feels soft and keeps my curls are flourishing all day. When it says 3-minute miracle they ain’t lying y’all for real this stuff is the truthI usually let it sit in my hair first thing when I get in the shower and rinse it out by the time I’m getting out. The smell is flattering too. You can get it from any store like Walmart or Target for 2.99 ( a steal)!

The “Creme of Nature Pure Honey Moisture Replenish and Strength Hair Mask” works well on my hair too. I use it about every two weeks. It shows really good results! It makes my hair soft and it smells really good. I wash my hair and then put it in a shower cap for about an hour and wash it outYou can get it for $7.99 from Walmart, Target or any hair supply store.

2. Cowashing

Along with deep conditioning to keep my curls nice I usually wash my hair every 3-4 days. Washing your hair everyday can make your hair really dry and sometimes your curls won’t look as good if you keep doing that. In between washes you can use the “asiam” co-wash that that I’ll put below!

The As I Am Coconut CoWash Cleansing Conditioner” works so good on my hair! I use it between washes if i need it and I swear it brings back my curls when my hair is starting to feel dry or I just know I’m going to have a bad hair day! I put it on during my shower and wash it out at the endYou can get this anywhere you can buy hair supplies at for about $8.00-$12.00.

3. Satin Pillows

I swear when you buy a satin pillow you will never go back! I used to not think it will do anything to my hair but, I have felt my hair drastically change since laying on it. SO SOFT!!! I strongly recommend you buy one or at least wearing a hair cap to sleep every night. I don’t like sleeping with a hair cap because it makes my hair lay funny but to all it’s own and you can do whatever you want! You can buy both of these items from either Amazon,Walmart, target or a beauty supply store. If you don’t follow these rules at least listen to me and DO NOT WEAR YOU HAIR UP TO SLEEP!! it breaks your hair off!

4. NO HEAT

I know some people are going to be hurt reading this tip but do not use heat ladies! I’m not going to lie though I use heat about twice a year nothing crazy though. I think personally if you use the right products while your hair is curly doing it a couple of times won’t hurt it but don’t do it too much.

5.Grease your scalp

I use tea tree oil to grease my scalp because my scalp gets dry fast and I read that it also promotes growth. I like it because it tingles and I try to do that every night when my hair is dry but mainly when my I do leave-ins and just wash it out because they do say don’t leave it in. It’s about 2.99 anywhere really you could even go to the grocery store!

These 5 tips are just things I do mostly to keep my curls looking good and also my hair growing. I am not saying this will work on your hair but it’s just what I do for my hair and it’s working well. I hope this helps you guys on what to use for your hair and let me know if you have any questions! I’ll be back next week with a new topic!
